TOGETHER IN LIFE

Share about a couple that exemplifies a healthy, Christ-centered marriage.

What stands out to you as unique about their marriage?

Whether you’re married or not, what would you hope to emulate about their character?

TOGETHER IN THE WORD

When you think about marriage and the roles of husbands and wives, what emotions or thoughts come to mind?

Read Ephesians 5:21-33

  • Look in your Bible. Is verse 21 at the end of the last paragraph or at the beginning of the passage? Does it make a difference in how you interpret the passage?
  • Read the passage in the NLT. Thoughts?

THE JESUS ROLE

Re-read Ephesians 5:21 and 25 noting the word “as” in the NLT. Then read Hebrews 5:7-8.

  • Consider this quote: “Both husbands and wives are invited into the Jesus role and each carry great challenge and difficulty and suffering.”
  • After considering the quote and two passages, what does it mean to be invited into the role of Jesus in our marriages?

ONE FLESH

Re-read verse 31.

  • Don showed us some slides with favorable and unfavorable character traits in men and women. If a man strives to be strong and involved, and women tries to be soft and competent, does this make up one flesh?
  • Submission cannot be demanded of a person but given freely by a person in the security of their relationship with Jesus. How does having Jesus as the source of your security and significance change the way you love your spouse?

TOGETHER IN PRAYER & ACTION

  • Examine your heart and evaluate the depth and frequency of how you serve your family.
    • Where can you see the biggest room for improvement in your heart for your family?
    • What “towels” do you need to pick up in order to love your family?
  • Consider the role of God has called you to, and ask the Holy Spirit to empower you to live out the gospel in radical ways.
    • What roles do you have? Be specific.
    • How does this unique relational role inform how you ought to love?
  • Pray that God will empower you to have wisdom and courage to love well.
  • Pray that the Spirit would convict you in the moments where you fall short, to confess it and try again.
