TOGETHER IN LIFE

Have you ever forgotten something big or that carried big consequences (for example, locking your keys inside your car or forgetting a loved one’s birthday or your wedding anniversary)?

TOGETHER IN THE WORD

Read Deuteronomy 6:4–12 aloud together.

KEY QUESTION:

I remember…. (what)
I never want to forget, because….(who)

QUESTIONS:

This message was given to Israel after they had been delivered from Egypt. These are commandments to Israel about their relationship with God and the instructions on how to remember what God had done for them.

  1. Deuteronomy 6:5 tells us, “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” (Jesus repeats in Matthew 22:37 that this is the first and greatest commandment). What does this command say to you? Is this easy to do?
  2. Proverbs 4:23 states,” Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” What are ways you can guard your heart? What outside
    influences can distract you?
  3. Deuteronomy 6:7-9 are instructions on how to remember the things the Lord has done for Israel, emphasizing the importance of passing these on to future generations. What are some things that we do as a church body or that you do as a family that help us remember what the Lord has done
  4. Re-read Deuteronomy 6:10-12 for the reminder to not forget what God has done. As part of the Passover celebration the Jewish tradition is to recite or sing the Dayenu for which the response was, “It would have been enough.” Do you have an experience where you can relate by sharing what God has done and you can feel satisfaction and thankfulness even if everything was not solved?
  5. Why do we forget what God has done for us? Why is it important to share what God has done for us?

TOGETHER IN PRAYER & ACTION

Take time to share with your group as you feel led:

I remember…(what)

I never want to forget because…(who)

Pray with thanksgiving for what God has done!
