TOGETHER IN THE WORD
THIS WEEK’S KEY PASSAGE: Genesis 15:1
Note: If you are meeting as a group, we encourage you to read the text together out loud.
KEY THOUGHT:
God reveals Himself so we may enjoy Him.
“God is most glorified when I am most satisfied in Him.” John Piper
GOING DEEPER:
Louie categorized four areas of revelation, quickly touching on the first three, and expanding the teaching in the fourth.
Creation (Psalm 19:1-2)
Louie suggested we must have a balanced view of God’s creation—playground vs. workplace. Redemption restores creation by acclimating us back to God to enjoy Him and His creation. How does this resonate with you?
Mankind (Genesis 1:27, Romans 2:15, Matthew 22:37-38)
We are made to relate; we have a conscience; and we are created to love our Creator and one another.
God is glorified when we are happy with what we have. Give examples from your life.
Scripture (John 20:31)
Scripture may be the link tying all other types of revelation together. How might this be?
Jesus Christ
Promise/Prophecy: Through the Fall, the Flood, and the Tower of Babel we see our need for God’s intervention.
In Genesis 12, God starts a new plan through Abram with the promise of Messiah. 1 John 3:2 reveals God’s end game. What do you think it means by “we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is?”
Sacrifice/Worship: The sacrifice, which was necessary to satisfy God’s wrath/justice, opens the way to unhindered and direct worship of God through Jesus Christ.
Enjoy the review of the Good News of the Gospel in these Scriptures:
- Psalm 51:7-8
- Romans 1:18-25
- 1 John 1:9
Deepest Longings/Greatest Aspirations: We all seek to have our needs and longings met, but many times we have wrong strategies. Read Jeremiah 2:13. Talk about some of your “broken cisterns” and your successes.
Louie returns to Genesis 15:1 stating Abram needed to get one thing straight — God is his deepest longing and aspiration! Look up the following rich verses and discuss how God satisfies:
- Psalm 119:57-58, 64
- Lamentations 3:19-24
- Psalm 73:26
- Job 19:25-27
Consider the following quote from Joni Eareckson Tada:
“Life is War. I wake up every morning feeling besieged by various afflictions. Nevertheless, I see myself in the choir of Levites who marched onto the battlefield in front of Jehoshaphat’s troops, singing “Give thanks to the Lord, for His steadfast love endures forever (2 Chronicles 20:21-22).”
Do you agree? Why or why not?
TOGETHER IN ACTION
This week, try each day to remember God has spoken and still speaks. If you have put your trust in Jesus, He has forgiven you, and you have everything you need in Him. Take time to rest in that truth and thank Him for His great love toward you.
