TOGETHER IN LIFE

**On Sunday, Steve talked about the gift of the Holy Spirit. Think back, what is the best gift you have every received? What is one gift you were less than thrilled about?

TOGETHER IN THE WORD

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

John 16:7-11

QUESTION: How do you think the disciples felt hearing that Jesus would be leaving them? Have you ever felt like Jesus was distant or even absent?

WHY IS IT TO THEIR ADVANTAGE FOR CHRIST TO LEAVE AND SEND THE HOLY SPIRIT?

  1. He is the Helper – Comforter – Advocate

QUESTION: How have you experienced the help of the Holy Spirit?

QUESTION: Why do you think Jesus points to the Helper at this point in the life of the disciples?

QUESTION: In your own words, why do you think it was important for Jesus to depart from the disciples?

WHAT DOES JESUS TELL US ABOUT THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?

QUESTION: Why do you think there is so much confusion about the Holy Spirit today? What questions do you have about his work?

QUESTION: Do you think it’s possible that the enemy wants us to misunderstand the work of the Spirit? Why might he want to do that?

He will CONVICT – expose or convince

  • He will convict concerning sin

QUESTION: Have you ever experienced the Spirit’s conviction over sin? What was the experience like? If a person has never experienced the Spirit’s conviction over sin? What might it say about their spiritual condition?

  • He will convict concerning righteousness

QUESTION: The Holy Spirit points us to the truth of the resurrection of Jesus. Why is necessary for us to know about the resurrection of Jesus? Isn’t knowing about his death enough?

  • He will convict concerning judgment

QUESTION: “The ruler of this world is judged.” How is the truth of judgment good news for those that believe? How is it bad news for those who do not believe?

QUESTION: Read Acts 2:23-40 together as a group. How do you see Jesus’ words in John 16 connect with what is happening on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2? In Acts 2:37-38, what do we see is the appropriate response to the conviction of the Holy Spirit?

TOGETHER IN ACTION

Each day this week, thank God for the gift of the Holy Spirit and invite Him to shape you to bring glory to God. Take some time alone or with a close mentor to listen for the Spirit’s conviction in your life and follow His leading.

TOGETHER IN WORSHIP

We often miss a vital part of prayer: listening. Take time together to ask God to examine your heart and to reveal the areas of life that need confession and repentance. Then take time to listen and respond to the Holy Spirit’s convicting work.
