DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
- Read Mathew 19:16-26. The rich young ruler perceived Jesus as a good teacher but not Lord. He was deceived thinking that he had kept the law since he was a child. Jesus looked at him and loved him. Jesus drew out his heart and asked him to relinquish what was between them. His wealth was creating a gap and Jesus was providing a way to close it. The rich young ruler’s wealth was his strategy to protect his will and Jesus asked him to give up that which was keeping him from the Kingdom. What would Jesus zero in on as your precious possession that is keeping you from the Kingdom? Will you surrender it so that you can draw close to him?
“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.” James 4:8-10
“And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” 17 And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” 18 He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, 19 Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 20 The young man said to him, “All these I have kept. - Read Matthew 5:1-12. Are you in mourning? Are you worn down? Are you poor in spirit? Has life beaten you down? Is righteousness being denied to you? Are you humbling yourself and doing the right thing and still being treated unfairly? Jesus knows how you feel. If you are born again and have a saving relationship with Jesus Christ He is with you shoulder to shoulder every moment. The beatitudes may hit close to home today or have in the past. If not, they will someday soon. Wherever you are at He loves you. How are you learning to be like Christ in your current circumstance as you surrender your will to His and allow Him to transform you more and more into His image?

- Read John 21:15-19. Peter denied Jesus three times. Jesus restored Peter into fellowship with Him as he asked him three times if he loved him. Peter was hurt by this but it humbled him and revealed his repentant heart. Jesus said to feed His sheep and follow Him. Jesus is asking you, “Do you love me?” “Will you surrender everything to me?” “Will you show your love for me by the way you love others?”
“When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18 Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19 (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.)
